Onion: Celebrity Bull Terrier

Charting the rise to celebrity of a miniature bull terrier with a taste for the limelight. Onion has been in Ewan McGregor movie 'Scenes of a Sexual Nature', has a light modelled on her bullie curves, and is the face of the canine social event of the year: Peckham Pet-tastic! It's a starry life for a pampered pooch.

Onion does Blackpool...

The long-awaited, much-anticipated BLACKPOOL PET-TASTIC is nearly here!

Sunday 13th September 2009
2pm to 5pm

Blackpool Promenade, beside North Pier, in front of the Metropole Hotel, Blackpool FY1 1RQ

And Onion is the very proud (and decidedly camp) face of the event!
Make a costume, dress up your dog, and come along!

"Pet-Tastic has already travelled around the country and internationally – visiting Peckham, Norway, Bexhill-On-Sea and Lewisham. But organisers say they’ve saved the best till last and are now heading for Blackpool! It’s not your average Sunday afternoon out. The canine social event of the year offers dog owners the chance to embrace a little fun, dress up their dog and head for the prom this weekend (Sunday September 13) for a picnic and some cool sounds. Event organiser Rachael House said: “Sun, sea, fish and chips, the Tower, ballrooms, the Grundy Art Gallery, drag queens, rollercoasters and ghost trains. And now dogs dressed up. We can’t believe our luck!” “If you’ve never been to a Pet-Tastic before then you’re in for a treat – with the chance to dress a dog-shaped biscuit with icing, decorate a dog mask, or get your face painted to more closely resemble the dog you’ve always longed to be.” Following her triumphs in Peckham and Lewisham, Onion the miniature bull terrier will be the face of Blackpool Pet-Tastic. In her saucy tattooed sailor outfit Onion will be winking at the girls and flirting with the boys – keep an eye out for her and make sure to greet her with a ‘hello sailor!’ As well as admiring beautiful dogs, their owners, and Blackpool itself, their will music from Johnny and the Wags performing dog songs from Iggy Pop’s I wanna be your dog to Donny Osmond’s Puppy Love (participants can howl along if they like!) And if that’s not enough excitement, artists WebsterGotts are creating a brand new dog-related performance for the event. Dogs will enjoy a delicious picnic, adoration from the crowds and a grand day out. Clothed canines and their consorts may also take part in a parade, culminating in a presentation of certificates and souvenir. All are welcome to attend – you don’t need to have a dog! Just walk along and mingle, meet people, celebrate and form part of a vibrant community in the heart of Blackpool for three wonderful hours."

Liberty for Onion Lights!

Posh department store Liberty of London has long stocked the Onion Light, but we have only just discovered that they include it on their website, in the category 'For the trendsetters' (of course!). Their description is rather charming:
"Dog is man's best friend, or so the saying goes; this could be just the gift for the animal lover in your life. The dog light will provide loyal companionship (in a very quiet sort of way) whilst shedding light on the darkest of places. Watch it light up when you walk into the room (at a flick of a switch), warding off intruders with the homely glow it casts. And possibly the best part is, there's no feeding, walking or grooming involved! This is the perfect gift for someone who either needs a bit of company, a bit of light, or both."

Thank you Liberty, for having a bull terrier in your shop!

Onion and the Chickens

Yes, see it with your own eyes: Onion sharing leftover rice pudding with Maud and Gertie, her hens! Quite what Onion would do if the rice pudding were removed from the equation, we're not too sure...but luckily this bullie's stomach is more important than her desire to pursue poultry!

Designer Dog or Loch Ness Monster?

Onion has been holidaying in Norfolk again.

This is a rare shot of her swimming (waves and water are generally to be avoided -- unless of course someone has carelessly thrown a kong in the shallows). As someone unkindly pointed out, she looks rather more like Nessie, Scotland's famous beast, than like a movie star.

But she luckily has also been snapped, celebrity-style, lounging about on the sand, showing off her latest designer togs. In Onion's case, these are a Liberty-print collar and blanket from LoveMyDog. So fabulously stylish, we can't believe she didn't get a spot in the new Sex and the City film!

Onion: The Return

Firstly, apologies to all those who have enquired about Onion in the past few months. Onion is fine and dandy. She did her bit when we moved house (predictable chaos in the packing boxes), assisted us in digging the garden (her forte being to reposition plants as soon as they have been planted) and is now kindly helping our new arrivals -- Maud and Gertie, two hens -- to settle in to life around a bull terrier (the bullie run now takes in a full circuit of the henhouse!).

She has been well (apart from when she ate most of a bone and bunged herself up completely, necessitating a trip to the vet for colonic irrigation -- what ALL the celebs are doing these days, so we hear) and enjoying some time out of the limelight!

Fame beckons again though, as there is talk of an imminent TV appearance... Watch this space!

Photos soon!

Bullyton for you!

There's a new online magazine, all about bull terrier rescue. Informative, moving, and full of pictures of our favourite Roman-nosed dogs, the Bullyton is well worth a read. And Onion is very proud to be the inaugural covergirl for the magazine - particularly as the magazine's main focus is on South Florida, and Onion lives in slightly less sunny climes of London, England. Well done to Joe Morweiser for establishing this fab publication!

"If dogs were humans, Onion would be Scarlett Johansson"

We must apologise for Onion's recent absence from blogging. After all the excitement of Lewisham Pet-Tastic, we whisked her off for a week of sand and crab sandwiches in sunny Norfolk.

And while we were away, the Independent on Sunday of 22nd April included a piece by Luiza Sauma which described Lewisham Pet-Tastic in glowing terms: "a Staffordshire Bull Terrier dressed as a pink bunny is canoodling with a tiny white West Highland Terrier who's come as Princess Leia (with side buns and all)...Children are busy decorating dog biscuits and masks, having their faces painted (as dogs, of course)...and another Westie, dressed as some sort of musketeer, helps himself to some treats...The next one is on 23 June, in Peckham. So what are you waiting for? Borrow a dog, come along, and be part of a communal work of art.'

And, of course, Onion earned a mention:
"At the centre of it all sits Onion, Lewisham Pet-tastic's miniature bull terrier mascot, resplendent in space-age silver, in homage to Laika, the original astro-dog. If dogs were humans, Onion would be Scarlett Johansson. After all, she's a beautiful, glamorous, young actress."

We are, as you might imagine, inordinately proud!

And, for the record, three Bullies In Need bullies came too. Two were superheroes, dressed as Batman and Superman, and all three were much loved by children, dog owners, passers-by... They were a huge and lovable credit to bullies in general and rescue bullies in particular and it was a delight to meet them!

Canine cosmonaut?

Onion has the great good fortune to have been chosen by fab artist Rachael House to be the poster pooch for her next ‘canine art social event’, Lewisham Pet-Tastic to be held on Saturday 14 April 2007. Rachael has hand-made a beautiful spacesuit for Onion, complete with badges that honour Laika and other pioneering dogs in space.
As well as the chance to meet the famous Onion(!), you can dress up your dog and join the fancy-dress picnic from midday and the parade at 3pm. You can even have your face painted as a dog, decorate a dog-shaped biscuit or a dog mask.
So, start making your costumes (on any theme you like!) and please come and join Onion at Lewisham Market, Lewisham High Street, Lewisham SE13 7HB.

For more information contact Deborah Efemini, Lewisham Town Centre Manager, 020 8297 5635 or deborah.efemini@lewisham.gov.uk or artist Rachael House on rachaelhouse@btinternet.com.

Have dog, will travel

Onion has her own luggage. It's one of the requirements of a dog diva, apparently. The adapted suitcase contains her favourite possessions -- food, bed, kong, blanket, and on this occasion an Onion Light to give to a friend. Everything a pampered pooch might need for a long weekend away! Hampshire, here we come.

Belated Bullie Valentine

Well, there was me, waiting around all day for a romantic suitor, and all I get is this from my mistress.

Of course I love my master and mistress (and their access to the food cupboard etc) BUT a dishy dog is what I dreamt of. Thank goodness for the likes of TinTin and Mackie who make this bullie babe feel special!
Big licks to you all (better than any roses!)

Clever Dog!

Ever wondered what your dog is thinking?

Seamus Ryan included Onion in his Sunday Shoots (where you can stop off from buying flowers in London's Columbia Road and get snapped in whatever that week's project is). He seems to have interpreted deep thought in our small beast!

Why every dog deserves a blog

If your dog has no blog, what are you waiting for? Dog-blogging brings many unexpected benefits. For example:
1. Onion and her master and mistress are attending a wedding this month. We contacted Jasper the Staff, who lives near the nuptials, and he used his local knowledge to point us in the direction of a suitable dog-friendly B&B. We're now booked in and looking forward to meeting the resident Weimaraner!
2. Onion gets to feature on other cool canine websites, such as Clover's blog, which has all kinds of great dog stuff, and even on websites in languages she and her master and mistress don't speak, such as this Oslo Bull Terrier blog.
3. We get to see lots of other bullies behaving in typical bullie ways, such as Wilson, and Scuba.
Surely every dog deserves this chance to be a worldwide webdog?

Happy Birthday to Onion!

Onion reached the grand old age of three yesterday. As this computes to twenty-one, she had a big celebration. Which in Onion's life simply means a big bone. A very big bone in this case...

Wow! How to tackle it? Just shut your eyes and go...

Being Onion, she then tried to swallow it whole...

As you can see,it was a very happy birthday! And we'd like to wish a happy belated birthday to Onion's lovely siblings too: to Measle, Nemo, Jake, Elsa, Hazel and Millie. Hope there were bones all round!
